When Lincoln said "a house divided against itself cannot stand", the meant that if the nation became any more divided than it already was, it would fall into chaos.

Strategies, Advantages, and Disadvantages for the North and South
North (Union) South (Confederate)
Nicknames: 'Billy Yank', 'Yanks', 'Yankees', 'Bluebellies'
Strategies for winning the war: The union planned a 'three pronged attack'. This plan would block off all southern ports to keep the union from trading with Europe, take control of the Mississippi river to keep the South from supplying its troops, and capturing the southern capital where the Confederates were located. Disadvantages: weak motivation, officers not aggressive enough, fighting on unfamiliar territory, believed the war would be over quickly, etc. Advantages: Abraham Lincoln, greater population, military power, industrial power, more money, more railroads, more farmland, etc. |
Nicknames: 'Jonny Rebel', 'Rebs', 'Rebels', 'Confederates'
Strategies for winning the war: The South planned to fight a defensive war. They wanted to bring the northerners into unfamiliar territory, and confuse them. The southerners were also counting on Europe to send them money and supplies in exchange for cotton. Like the North, the South wanted to capture the northern capital where the union was located. Disadvantages: weak leadership skills, no navy, fewer men and supplies, few factories, less money, weaker government, etc. Advantages: outstanding military officers, strong motivation, fighting on home ground, soldiers skilled with guns and horses, etc. |
